How Do You Make the Plastics on a 4wheeler Lookgood Again

  1. Sanding/restoring plastic. How to guide

This question comes up a lot, and I see a lot of bad communication given. This is a the proper way to restore plastic, the Trunk Store manner. If you lot perfer the rubbing with blueish jeans, and mop due north glo mode, your looking in the incorrect spot.

Now first off, I dont suggest grabbing your lightly scratched discontinued plastic to start with. Observe some old ratty plastic to learn on, and exercise on. My instructions are going to be detailed, and if you cutting corners, it will not plough out practiced. Follow these to a tee, and your plastic volition turn out similar new.

Second, Im using plastics that are way across repair. These have very deep scratches, that would take days to sand out, and so your plastic would be wavy and not look skilful once its polished. I purposly left the edges rough, to bear witness progress of the unlike grits of paper. I likewise purposly left a few deep scratches to prove how a few over sights can ruin a good finish.

Here is the before picture show. Find the deep road rash on the corners of each side. I volition exist working on the lesser left corner simply.

  2. I only use 3M wet/dry sand paper. Y'all tin option this up at well-nigh whatsoever auto parts store, and I believe Wal-Mart carries it.

Make certain your plastic is VERY clean! I suggest warm soapy water, and towel dry. Start out with 220 grit west sanding. All these instruction on sanding are given with WET sanding ONLY. Work on the deeper scratches first, and so work out to the nicer parts. Work the sand paper in one management with these ii coarse grits. That mode if you accidently get sand or something on the newspaper, you dont accept a whirl wind of scratches to at present fix.

Keep the paper and plastic wet at all times.
The 2d pic is what happens when you dont have your paper wet plenty. The plastic will build upwards on the paper. With plenty of this buildup, it will and then start scratching your plastic. So keep lots of h2o on both, continue changing sides of your sand newspaper, and look at the paper often.

  3. Y'all will utilise the 220 and 320 to get down to the deepest parts of your scratches. To tell if you have washed that... run h2o over your plastic. This will magnify the scratches and then you know where to keep sanding. Y'all can too dry out the plastic completely, and the deep scratches will usually be shiney, while your plastic is ho-hum from sanding.

Once they are all gone, move on to 400 grit. If y'all sanded all one management like I told you to, this part volition go fast. Sand just a little off the grain at present. If you sanded straight down the plastic, to your hand about 10 degrees and sand with the 400.

One time the paper starts feeling like it is sliding off the plastic easily, motility on to 600 grit. The 600 pretty much but takes out the scratches that was left by the 400 grit.

If y'all expect at the edges on this pic, you can encounter how much of a difference the 600 compares to the 220 grit.

  4. At present this is where your plastic starts to wait good, and you'll desire to hurry it along.... but don't!

You lot tin can use some 1200 or 1500 grit in this expanse, simply I skipped straight to the 2000.
Yous want to use the 2000 as a buffer pretty much. You lot want to swirl the paper, become in directly lines, go at angles. Make certain the newspaper touches every office of your plastic at to the lowest degree a 100 times. Spend some time with the 2000, it will only make a killer end in one case its done.

One time you lot have gotten the scratches out, the plastic will look similar old Maier tedious when its dry. Dont worry, your not done even so.

  5. You will also need some buffing compound. This canteen is what I used. You can get something like it, but I only suggest what Im using.
Its 3M Perfect-It II Fine Cut rubbing compound.

You want to grab a soft cotton material. For my expanse, I used a drop about the size of a dime.
This stuff is practical just like car wax. You buff information technology on until it becomes dry or dull looking. Then accept a cloth diaper, and buff information technology till all the compound is gone. I usually put four or 5 coats on, and buff information technology really good the last few times.

  6. Once you take polished it out, you will have a shiney finish to your plastic. I take seen people and then use plastic renew to leave a super shiney show finish, simply its not really needed for an everyday riding car.

This aforementioned compound likewise works great to clean upwards sometime chrome. Employ some steel wool, a soft terry cloth towel, and this compound to remove water spots, and brand it shine!!

Similar I said upwards top, I left a few deep scratches on purpose. You can see them at the corner. See how the buffing chemical compound sits in those scratches, and makes them like an eye magnet? That is why you lot demand to take the time to sand out all of your scratches! If you make it a hurry, and cutting corners, the plastic will look worse and so when y'all started.

See the difference betwixt the 220, clear down to the 2000? A fiddling plastic sanded off will make a world of divergence.
Notice the overnice bowling alley slick surface.... nice.

I promise this puts to rest some myths, or one-half-arse ways of doing this. Yous tin can brand your plastic look better then new again. Information technology just takes fourth dimension. I did this in 20 minutes kickoff to stop, and the finish is non every bit practiced as I would put on my automobile,,... but the steps are all there. A existent riding moving machine, could take 3-4 hours on the front fender alone, to make it look practiced. It does take time, just information technology will be worth it.

  7. Give myself a pat on the dorsum! That's nigh exactly the way I did my gas tank except I used a buffing wheel in my die grinder and some plastic buffing compound for the terminal footstep. Autozone has a variety pack of sandpaper that has all the grits yous will need to do the job.

Thats the ideal way, merely take tools to exercise. These steps are too the same you would take to sand out a sunday faded tank. I was wanting one of them to do this on, simply a fender is all I could come up up with.

  11. I detest sanding, why you think I merely did the corner?

Metal tanks are pretty simple if you dont take any dents. There are a lot of factors that become into prepping a metal tank.

If you lot can, describe your tank shape to me. Like how many dents, where they are at, are at that place stickers on information technology, and so on. Pics would be nice besides.
